DMD is delighted to announce that its exclusive content management contract with Virgin Trains on the UK west coast has been extended to a third year of service, with a Year 4 continuation option also agreed. DMD’s upscaled service includes the addition of a unique catch-up feature for fans of ITV reality phenomenon Love Island.
To date the DMD Digital team has managed provision of Hollywood movies, TV titles, browser games and digital magazines for Virgin Trains’ innovative WiFi entertainment service BEAM, and after a rigorous review its expanded service adds a whole raft of exciting new enhancements to the offer.
“Virgin Trains chose DMD because we are the leading full-service onboard entertainment specialist for train operators”, notes DMD Head of Digital Andrew Wiltshire. “We bring years of global experience as an inflight entertainment content service provider and a deep knowledge of the unique conditions and opportunities the rail sector enjoys. We’ve also been a digital delivery pioneer for well over a decade, as a co-originator of one of the airline industry’s top portable platforms.”
DMD has worked with Virgin Trains to refine its Hollywood movie offer to better match with audience journey times and preferences, and BEAM’s superb TV line-up is now skewed away from long-form box set dramas to lighter, more easily accessible pop-culture titles from UK providers like ITV and Sky.
That new-look TV schedule and unique catch-up feature, which successfully trialled on Virgin Trains last year, lets Love Island viewers enjoy each weekly wrap just days after broadcast throughout its 2018 summer season. That’s a perfect fit for Virgin Trains’ core customer profile, BEAM data analysis indicates.
“We are proud of our record of challenging the status quo, and DMD has been instrumental in helping to launch and develop our industry-first BEAM service”, says Martin Smith, Head of Customer Propositions at Virgin Trains for its west coast route. “They know how to strike a perfect balance between the content our customers know and love and the awesome entertainment they might have missed.”
As well as a specialist rail CSP DMD is also the number one provider of digital publications to travel operators and a longstanding commercial partner with virtually all UK news publishers.
“So we’re able to help Virgin Trains greatly expand the choice of reading material they offer passengers”, says Wiltshire, “by adding a range of national and regional newspapers to an already superb magazine selection. It’s a move driven by close analysis of both BEAM usage data and their ever more diverse customer demographic.”
Virgin Trains’ digital newsstand will soon carry the Guardian, Daily Mail and Mirror (on Sundays the Observer, Mail on Sunday and Sunday Mirror) plus a route-specific regional range – from London’s Evening Standard to The Scotsman, via the Birmingham Mail, Liverpool Echo and Manchester Evening News.
“We’re thrilled we’ve been invited to work with Virgin Trains on evolving the BEAM proposition”, says DMD Managing Director Paul Rayson. “We were there for its launch and now have the benefit two years’ data-driven insight to help make it an even more compelling service for passengers.”
